The Carl Sword family (published in “Dauntless Dunn” 1970) By Christine I can't seem to remember much about the early days. When we were young and the folks talked about earlier things we were bored…now, that we are "old" we would like to know, and there is no one around to tell us. I do know that Mom, Mrs. Hilda Trampe Sword was born in Minnesota and came with her folks the Ernest and Wilhelmina Trampe family from Renville, Minnesota to Dunn Couty in 1906. Her folks were homesteaders in the Dunn Center area where she grew up and attended school. Carl Sword was born in Sweden, Dec. 21 1891. As a young man he with a friend, Andrew Olsen, left their homeland and came to Canada where they worked until they came to the United States. Carl came to Tolley, North Dakota when about eighteen and worked on a farm. After a time he became a grain buyer. One thing I do remember is that he had the first dealership of the Atwater Kent and Stromberg-Carlsen radios. The first sets were pretty exciting and we had to listen thru an ear phone only. I remember Dad setting us on a chair and we scarcely dared breathe a sound. Later speakers came out and that first Christmas Dad opened the windows so other folks could also hear it. This was when we lived in the old Occident Elevator house next to A.T. Thompson. The people could hear, but we almost frozen to death, or so we thought. Another thing comes to mind. When Grandpa lived in his little house next to ours and Mom went out to attend to his needs during a blizzard, she heard a moaning noise A man bad fallen off his horse and wasn't able to get up. His fingers and toes were partly frozen but the folks brought him in and cared for him. He was always grateful they saved his life. (Christine did not finish the story, and Elva, on a visit home, wrote the rest) Carl and Hilda Sword were married March 24th, 1917 at Dunn Center by Rev. Fylling. Their first home was the Gonyo house in Dunn Center, Later they moved out to the John Heemstra farm and farmed for a year. Thea they resided south of the tracks in the Occident Elevator house until 1929 when they bought the Boe house and moved it to its present site. Carl worked for a Lumber Yard in Dunn Center, then in 1911 took over the Farmers' Elevator In 1921 he became manager of the Occident Elevator. Then on Dec 7, 1941, the day of Pearl Harbor bombing, he purchased the John Thompson store which he operated until his death. Community entertainment was, among other activities, the dances which might be in town or at some big, new barn in the country. One incident happened at one of these at the John C. Larsen farm. Charles was a young lad of five or six. He was watching the fun and went to lean against the bay loft door, which was closed but not latched. He fell through missing several people and landed on the cement floor. He lay unconscious until morning. One of the high-lites of the Sword families life was a trip to the New York World's Fair, in 1941. In 1946 Carl enjoyed a visit to his homeland. The Sword's had three children. The youngest, Charles, still resides at Dunn Center and runs his father's store. He is married to the former Martha Krieger and they have two children. Elva is married to Ernie Baskins. She lives at Ventura, California and does sub-teaching. Her husband is retired from the Navy and now works in the Probation Department of Juvenile Hall of Ventura County. They have two children. Christine married Louie Andre of Richmond Annex. California. He works as a machinist in a Tool and Die shop. They have two children.
Vid besöket i Sverige 1946 besökte han bl.a. systern Hilda Carlsson. De åkte till Stockholm, där de tog en flygtur över huvudstaden. [Källa: Sven Carlsson]
